California secures $4M to fund the Youth Sports For All Act

Huge news out of California! The Play Equity Fund has officially announced that the Youth Sports For All Act is fully funded with a historic $4 million investment from the State of California. Originally passed in 2025, this landmark legislation is now fully backed to launch a new Blue-Ribbon Youth Sports Commission.

For too long, skyrocketing costs and fragmented programs have sidelined kids who simply want to play. This $4 million funding puts California on a definitive path to change that. The new Commission will help develop a framework for a centralized state entity—one with the regulatory and budgetary authority needed to dismantle systemic "pay-to-play" barriers and secure equitable sports access for every child, regardless of zip code, race, or family income.

A victory of this scale requires relentless advocacy and legislative courage. Several California leaders were key champions including Assemblymember Tina McKinnor, Governor Gavin Newsom and his office for prioritizing youth sports in California, and Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, Senator Ben Allen, and Senator Lola Smallwood Cuevas.

Led by the Los Angeles Play Equity Coalition, a statewide movement of more than 50 organizations united to advocate for this funding.

It is a powerful example of what a state can do to improve safety and access to youth sports.
